I was a Gunsite disciple long before I ever went there. The writings of COL Cooper inspired me and instructed me. Over the last several years I’ve had the opportunity to attend various courses at Gunsite. In fact, of all the diplomas and training certificates I’ve ever earned, the certificate I was given for graduating the Gunsite 250 Defensive Pistol Class is the only one which is framed.
When I wrote my new book, Handgun Training for Personal Protection, I drew heavily on the teachings of Cooper and Gunsite. I did this for several reasons. Primarily because Cooper’s philosophy and the Gunsite doctrine are worth sharing but also partly because I knew that many who would read my book could not afford to ever go to Gunsite. And, I know what that is like. When I was a police officer I desperately wanted to go but, much like now, times were tight.
