WRITING

When Richard Mann was a senior in high school, his English teacher kept him after class one day and asked, “What are your plans for a career?” Richard replied that he wanted to write for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines. His English teacher responded with. “You’re failing English; I think you need to reconsider.”

In 1994, while he was still working as a police officer, Richard published his first article in Police Marksman Magazine. He soon also published articles in North American Whitetail, Traditional Bowhunter, Predator Extreme, and wrote the shooting column for Whitetail Journal. In 2005, after a lengthily law enforcement deployment to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, Richard walked away from law enforcement and took up writing full time.

Since then Richard has written for every major hunting and firearms periodical in the United States. He has also written the ammunition column in NRA Shooting Illustrated magazine for more than a decade. He also currently writes the Defensive Handgun column in Gun Digest and the Shooting Column for Game & Fish. Richard has also authored six gun and hunting books and served as the editor for the 13th Edition of Cartridges of the World. In 2019 Richard was 9th recipient of the Bill McRae Lifetime Achievement Award.

Currently Richard contributes to a variety of publications to include Gun Digest, Game & Fish, Shooting Illustrated, American Hunter, OSG Special Interest Publications, and yes, he also writes for Field & Stream and Outdoor Life.
