One Drill

If you could only use one drill to test the defensive handgun proficiency of someone what would that drill be?

How many shots would it involve? What would the distances to the targets be? Would you include a reload, movement, low light?

Would you also make any stipulations on the handgun or ammo used?

One drill? Let’s hear it.

Us a hand gun that you know and is comfortable. Draw it from a drawer, from a seated position, shooting at a target that is 180 drgrees from the original position of the muzzle, low light, at a target 20 feet away, one magazine with a dummy round on top or # 2 so you have to use immediate action to clear a stoppage. Put two, properly placed shots on target.

Situation: returning to your car after grocery shopping, an assailant charges at you from between cars. I’d simulate this on a dark range (enough light to mimic a parking lot at night) with a moving target. You carry bags in each hand and walk along the firing line. When you hear the target begin to move, you must draw from concealment and fire until the target stops. The target would have to start close enough to force movement.

Back facing three targets. At the sound of the turning targets, turn, draw, and engage with two shots on each. Step left or right, speed reload, and two more on each. 7 -10 yards.
