Moms Matter

Crisp fall days never fail to flood me with memories. I can remember lying in a pasture field beside my Mom, in the dark, looking at the stars, and listening to coonhounds sing along behind a ringtail headed to his den. I can remember sitting on a log, rifle on my lap and my Mom at my side, as we waited for a squirrel to stick his head out from behind a hickory.

When it comes to the outdoors and hunting, moms matter. Dads matter too but dads are different than moms. If just dad does it, it’s just a hobby, but when mom does it with dad, it’s a way of life. Kids are smart; smarter than we often give them credit for. When they see mom and dad living and hunting together it makes an impression. I know it made one on my sister and me.

Some men might have their feelings hurt because their offspring want to hunt with their mother instead of their father. Me? Nope. I’m rather proud of that. I’m proud of it because just like my Mom made my sister and me who we are, the mother of my children will make them a little like us – hunters.

Every human has the hunting gene embedded deep within that spiral of DNA but sometimes it takes a mom to find it and bring it out for all the world to see. Come to think of it, hunting is not the only thing that applies to.

Yep, moms matter.
