Some folks like to brag about all the ammunition they have stored in the preper bunker. Some like to show off their guns and expensive optics. Some folks can’t afford fancy guns or high dollar scopes so they put less expensive, fancy grips on their guns. That’s all well and good, but – as you might have guessed – I like empty cases. Empty cases are the result of all our time on the range and in the field. They are the one true thing that represents a shot taken – hit or miss. Empty cases have been a part of my life for a long time.
You see, for a long time, I was one of those guys who didn’t have really anything gun related to show off. This most mostly because I could not afford to buy anything worth showing off. However, on occasion, I would make a good shot but very often it was unwitnessed. So, what I started doing was saving the empty case as a reminder. When I got smart I started writing things on the cases with a Sharpie.
Things like, “Bat’s first deer” or “Missfire on mule deer” and “Bear 11-15-10 WV” After a while I had a row of these cases I wanted to keep to help me remember – and to give me something to show off – on my mantle. A gun writer with three kids cannot afford to mount everything he kills and some empty cases are not created by shooting at animals, which is why there are three that say “Finn Aagaard’s Rifle.” Several years ago my wife put some of my empty cases in a shadow box. It was a nice gift.
For my birthday this year she updated the collection with some of my favorites and I was surprised and very pleased. And, it got me to thinking that all of us – shooters and hunters – probably have some empty cases we would like to remember and brag about. And for this reason I’ve created the Empty Cases Gallery of Empty Cases.
Every week I’ll post a new photo and a short description of an empty case. The cool part of this endeavor is that Empty Cases’ readers can do the same thing. You send me a photo of an empty case that means something to you, with a short description, and I’ll post it. By the end of the year we should have an impressive trophy gallery of empty cases and bragging stories.
The best part – actually there are two best parts – is that its free and each month a randomly selected winner from the submissions for that month will receive a gift. The gift for February is a copy of the 13th Edition of Cartridges of the World, edited and signed by yours truly. The photo submitted by the winner each month will be posted in a gallery at the top of the EMPTY CASES page.
So, let’s see ’em. Show me your empty cases and I’ll show them off to the world.
