I’m not sure anyone knows exactly what a trail gun is. Best I can define a trail gun, is a gun you have with you out in the field but for no certain purpose. In fact, you have no plans to use it but are smart enough to know you might need it. Maybe a good analogy to a trail gun is a pocket knife; most times a pocket knife is carried because you know you would be unprepared if you did not have one with you.
