I\u2019m not talking about a rifle school where you learn to shoot; I\u2019m talking about a school where you learn how a rifle works. I\u2019m not sure a school like this actually exists but because I have a friend who could be the lead\u00a0professor\u00a0of that school, I\u2019m unofficially enrolled.<\/p>\n<p>You see, about once a month I come across something about a rifle I do not understand. This usually results in a call to telephone number (304) 292-0600. That\u2019s the direct line to <a href=\"http:\/\/newultralightarms.com\">New Ultra Light Arms<\/a> in Granville, WV and when you call that number Melvin Forbes answers. We talk about the kids, the weather, if the beans in the garden are ready to pull\u2026and then we get to the rifle question.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14392\" style=\"width: 899px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14392 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RC-15.jpg?resize=899%2C469\" alt=\"RC-15\" width=\"899\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RC-15.jpg?w=899&amp;ssl=1 899w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RC-15.jpg?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RC-15.jpg?resize=768%2C401&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RC-15.jpg?resize=326%2C169&amp;ssl=1 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">When you call Melvin Forbes, be prepared to take notes.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This happened today, like it usually happens about every 30 or so, and about halfway through an explanation of pure logic \u2013 logic so simple no one seems to ever think of it \u2013 I stopped Melvin and said, \u201cDo you know the difference between you and everyone else making rifles?\u201d I then answered the question for him, \u201cYou operate on the principle of how the rifle is made, everyone else operates on the theoretical concept of what they believe works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>To quote Sherlock Holmes \u2013 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, <em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>The world is full<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>obvious<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0things which nobody by any chance ever observes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Melvin builds rifles on a centerline he can control with the machinery he uses. Everyone else builds rifles and tries to incorporate procedures and features that have \u2013 been deemed through examples of one \u2013 to enhance performance. It is the reason serious rifle folk like me own multiple rifles built by Melvin. And, it\u2019s the reason there is not a better example of a lightweight sporting rifle available for purchase. But I do know that if you call him and ask about ordering a rifle, and ask about why he does this and that, the way that he does, he will tell you.
