However, so was the noise from high-powered rifles and shotguns. I put hundreds of .270 Winchester rounds down range and never wore any kind of hearing protection. Back in the day, it just wasn\u2019t popular. Lots of time spent on a tank range did my ears no good either.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying I can\u2019t hear, I just can\u2019t hear like I used too. And, there\u2019s that continual ringing that never goes away.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing protection is a must but I loath ear muffs. For that reason I\u2019ve been using rubber ear plugs for many years. But, if I spend all day on the range my ears get sore. And, I have to keep asking folks, \u201cWhat did the range master say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wildear.com\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13025\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/WE-2.jpg?resize=800%2C284\" alt=\"WE-2\" width=\"800\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/WE-2.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/WE-2.jpg?resize=300%2C107&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, at SHOT Show I met up with the smart guys from <a href=\"http:\/\/wildear.com\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Ear<\/a> and they build custom fitted earplugs. Now, this is nothing new but Wild Ear incorporate electronics into these form fitted plugs. They shut\u00a0down when shots are fired so your ears are protected.<\/p>\n<p>They have become a constant range companion and I can\u2019t wait for hunting season so I can hear like a kid, hear a kid, and not worry about getting my ear drums busted at the shot. When that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mossberg.com\/product\/mossberg-patriot-laminate-marinecote-adjustable-rifle-sights-27910\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mossberg in .375 Ruger<\/a> goes off on Vancouver Island this spring,\u00a0my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wildear.com\" target=\"_blank\">Wild Ears<\/a> should silence\u00a0the boom, but amplify the crash of <a href=\"http:\/\/empty-cases.com\/blog\/sasquatch-bear-rifle-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sasquatch<\/a> hitting the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The real question is how these things will hold up. I\u2019ve broken every electronic ear protection device I\u2019ve ever owned. Wild Ears\u00a0come with a two-year warranty; if I break them I\u2019ll let you know.
