Ultra Light Hunting Rifle Stories

NULA-1
Melvin Forbes and the first Ultra Light Arms rifle.

Most of the stories you hear about good hunting rifles involve itty-bitty groups or ridiculously long and difficult shots. This is because that’s really all there is to tell about most hunting rifles. There is an exception and that’s the rifles from New Ultra Light Arms. In 1985, New Ultra Light Arms started the light weight bolt-action hunting rifle craze.

Before then, there was no such thing. Melvin Forbes, through hours and hours of research and testing, created the rifle stock that all others should be judged by. Before paint and a butt pad it weighs only 8 ounces and is stiffer than a rifle’s barrel. The result are rifles so well balanced they are sublimely easy to shoot and so light that they have a way of getting away from you.

You zero them one time, they shoot all bullet weights to the same point of impact and are unaffected by weather or your clumsiness. Melvin has been building these rifles for 30 years and an astounding 71% of his customers have more than one. Some have a dozen or more.

Melvin spent a few days at my hunting camp this fall and on a windy night I managed to get him in front of a camera, talking about his rifle. He knows how to tell a pretty good story too.

Enjoy.
