SG-1
New Ultra Light Arms .308 Winchester with SIG Romeo 4 red dot sight.

Yesterday I mounted a SIG Romeo 4 red dot sight to my New Ultra Light Arms rifle in .308 Winchester. This is an amazingly compact and versatile sight. It weighs about three ounces. It has two reticles. It can also run off solar energy if the battery is dead. And, it comes with a low and high mount. The high mount is perfect for an AR and the low mount proved to be just right for the NULA. The base mounts are easy to switch and everything you need to do so is right in the box.

To see how well it performed I needed something to shoot at and it just so happened that I had recently received a new steel target from Viking Solutions. I put the target together in about 10 minutes and was happy to find that it is simple to takedown and reasonably portable. The 10 inch page is made of AR 500 steel and is 3/8-inch thick. The Viking Solutions website only shows an older version tired at $ 69.99 but I’m betting this target will sale for around $ 100.00 at most.

I set the target up at 114 yards and after zeroing the Romeo 4 I began to pound the target with Hornady’s new Precision Hunter ELDX load. I’ll admit I had a couple misses while shooting off-hand, either because I did not hold well or because the dot was a tad big and bright for my eye. But, the good news is that after two boxes of ammo I checked the zero and it had held perfectly. (For what its worth, the elevation and windage adjustments on Romeo 4 were spot on and repeatable at 0.5 MOA per click. And, the caps to the turrets have an integral tool to help you perform the adjustment.)

SIG’s Romeo 4 red dot should prove to be a great sight option on a variety of rifles, either as a backup or primary.

I’m impressed with the optics SIG is offering. My wife used one of their Whiskey 3 riflescopes last year to make a young whitetail buck and I’ve been testing a Whiskey 5 on several ARs for a Field & Stream article. If you’re looking for a red for sight or for a portable steel target, from what I experienced yesterday both of these seem to be a good choice. I’d encourage you to check out the Viking Solutions and SIG Optics product lines. I was a bit surprised as to what I found available from both.

At 114 yards there was no dimpling in the Viking Solutions steel plate from the .308 Winchester.
