Buffalo Hunting on a Boer War Battleground

Since my first safari in 2006 I have become addicted to Africa. Fortunately, I found an outfit – Fort Richmond Safaris – and a professional hunter – Geoffrey Wayland – capable of feeding that addiction. Sometimes I feel like a druggie going to a crack house to see my dealer. Yes, Africa can bite you that hard, and inject you with a venom that needs annual treatment. That’s why I return to Africa each year for a month at a time; I need my medicine.

This story, from NRA’s American Hunter magazine, details a buffalo hunt and demonstrates how a bad first shot can lead to a long and stressful day. Regardless, I would not trade the experience for another hunt. This year I took a buffalo with a single shot. It was satisfying to do so, but somewhat anticlimactic at the same time. That’s not to suggest you should try to get in a running gun battle with a buffalo, but if you do, you will never forget it, and little if anything else will measure up.
